When I built my 289 - mine's a Mark 2 - I assembled it as if it were a
modern L.A.T. car: modern Edelbrock manifold, modern Holley 4160 carb, mild
cam, Edelbrock aluminum heads, etc.. Out of respect for the purists all the
original parts sit in boxes in the garage in case a future owner wants to
make it concours. The original L.A.T. cam was a solid lifter cam. I can't
picture adjusting the valves on a Kitty every three months (or daily if
it's being raced...) but that;s what they offered.
I s'pose the question to be asked is what's "original", and why does it
matter? L.A.T. was an "option" but it wasn't "factory." Leaded gas was the
norm, and it's gone. We deal with the now, and it is what it is. After all,
it's our cars and we can do what we like with them.
If you want a 347, or a 302, have at it! My only concern is whether a
going-on-fifty-year-old car can handle the power, or whether fifth-year old
brake technology can stop the car in time if one is overdriving his / her
conditions.
