The Chevrolet Corvair was in production from 1960 to 1969. The Imp was
produced from 1963 to 1976.

The Imp was in the marketplace first, by five
years or so. And there was no overlap of design
teams. The tale is that Lord Rootes had turned
down the purchase of the VW works and, after the
VW proved to be a success, he felt driven to come
up with a superior design. Then the Morris Minor
beat the Imp to the dealers and the Imp ended up
still-born, though half a million were made over the years.
