Thanks again to everyone who offered suggestions.
I spent quite a bit of time under the car today, and saw no evidence of
damage of any kind. Exhaust looks fine for the entire length, and
pressure was quite equal at each exhaust outlet. The motor mounts look
solid, and there is no unusual movement of the drivetrain when I rev it.
Under the car, there aren't any noticeable marks or scars anywhere that
would indicate any serious contact of any kind.
With regard to the gravel in the bellhousing suggestion, there doesn't
seem to be any indication of this, and there are no noises in that area
at all, no matter what I do. The only place there is any unusual noise
at all is back through the carb under load. There also seems to be a bit
of a stumble on abrupt acceleration, which wasn't there before.
The more I look at it, the more I suspect a timing issue of some kind. I
probably won't have an opportunity to do anything else today, but will
get back at it next weekend. I will probably measure exhaust temps at
each cylinder, pull each plug to inspect, and do a compression test
while I am there. I will also check the timing, of course.
Beyond that, I guess I would have to get at the timing cover and check
that. I had suspected that it might be a vacuum advance issue, but the
car has a Mallory Unilite electronic distributor that doesn't have
vacuum advance. I'm still learning about this car as I have only owned
it for about half a year, during which it was in storage most of the
time. Back to the drawing board...
Thanks again, all.
Shaun
