I've found that if you have to be in the engine compartment and the
passenger footwell at the same time there are several options:
1. Get your kid to huddle in the passenger footwell and hold the wrench
there. Remember to not use too much invective from the other side of the
firewall... If you kid is bigger than you, you might have to be the one
to get under the dash ;)
2. Use Ductape to tape the wrench to the firewall, assuming you can get
it to lean against something substantial when torque is applied to the
other side.
3. Clamp the passenger-compartment side fastener with Vise-grips. Again,
you have to arrange things so the vise-grips jam against something
substantial as you turn things from the firewall side. You can jam a
piece of 1" square tubing over the end of the Vise-grip handle in order
to make it catch on something further away. Make sure you set the
vise-grips as tight as possible, because if it starts to slip then
you'll wreck the fastener (more).
