I think what we have here is a "YMMV" situation.  I am still using the
brake light switch that was in the car when I got it in 1977, and I've
had silicon in the car over a decade, no problems.  Other folks claim to
have had silicon related failures.  I'm sure you will hear lots of
different stories.
