Uncle Wally talked with me many times. He did say that it was the Feds
that killed the Tiger. Particulary the 5mph bumper standard as well
as the heigth. He said that Chyrsler did think about raising the suspension
ala the rubber bumper MGB but the cost for only 2500/cars per year was
prohibitive.
The smallest Chrysler V8 available was the 273. Basically the same as
the 318. But as Shelby found out with the GM engines, the distributor
is on the wrong end. Major rework or the firewall would be required.
This didn't deter Chrysler but the cost of meeting the Fed standards.
Trivia per Uncle Wally. Why does the more expensive Tiger have a
metal gas pedal while the cheaper Alpine is rubber? Because the
FEDS would not allow rubber covered suspended gas pedals at
that time.
