Paul,

A helpful hint on the side trim retainers.

The rear fenders have one trim retainer that has a square head that fits
through a larger stainless
trim slot and a hole in the rear fender. A nut inside the trunk area
tightens this, and prevents
and trim fall-off from the remainder of steel heads that are part of the
pop rivet retainers.

This piece was mangled, and the threads environmentally "challenged"
when the trim was removed
to paint the body. I left the pop riveted ones in place, but a few were
covered with bondo over the holes.
Theses were replaced with the SS GM plastic clip grips. They are OK, but
the pop riveted ones had
better resistance to accidental trim rub release.

The threaded rear ones were made from a small STAINLESS bolt/nut set
with extra nuts and plain and lock
washers, to prevent future rusting. The method used was to purchase a
4/40 (as I dimly recall) threaded bolt
and two nuts for each hole (two).

The bolt head was cut-off and a nut was welded to the thread. The head
was filed square, to match the trim
the slot entry and grip area. The "stud" was inserted into the slot
wider entry, then slid to the grip area opposite
the hole. The trim was snapped over the new (or existing) clips, and the
stud was inserted into the fender hole and
loosely tightened with the nut inside the fender. After adjusting the
trim position correctly, the nut was tightened,
and clip (stud) fastenings mated.

Trim, or this stainless nut, won't ever fall off (no bets on collisions,
though).

Steve
