Bob,
 It is said that the oil can foam and aside from lingering where it
shouldn't apparently it can create a condition like one gets finishing a
rootbeer float through a straw.
 I would recommend that the next time you change the oil, put in the
designated amount start the car briefly to fill the filter and oil galleys
then let it sit a few minutes and take a reading. If it is off,  mark your
dipstick to make it accurate(a dremel or a file should do). This way you
will always know that the marking is accurate to the correct amount in the
car. Not sure how important it is, but you might want to check it cold and
hot. At least in auto trannies it does make a difference.
