Sorry I haven't read the article, but I think it depends on the climate,
location of storage and the car itself. So.Cal. is "supposed" to be noted
for rust free cars. However, I have a fleet of 1960's-1970's rolling stock
that seems to suffer from a common problem for cars store outdoors. It rains
from about Oct.-May here. Often the rain seems to last upwards of two weeks
at a time even if it is only a drizzle. What I often find is that this water
migrates into the interior, trunk etc.. That is why I often find cars
without the problems found in a snow climate, but the floors have rusted
from the inside out.
Thus, I DO cover over the top of my cars with a plastic tarp. I find any
moisture trapment to be very minor compared to the havoc that water trapped
under the carpet or a lower quarter panel holding 3" of water from a trunk
leak creates. While I can see an argument for putting the plastic trap under
the car rather than over the car at least in my climate the best thing is to
keep water out of the car rather than off it. A car stored in a garage in
different climate may have different requirements. However, I would think a
cover that breaths would be better than no cover at all. Then of course
there is that Car Condom thing that is kept constantly inflated (like Viagra
run amuck).
