Jeff,

Lean fuel/air mixture ratios can be one cause, but too much advanced
ignition timing, and poor gasoline are a main concern. I do not know
the load conditions on your engine, or your distributor mechanical and
vacuum advance settings.

I have been running the Pertronix system for 3 years now, and haven't
changed the plugs. I paid close attention to having the distributor
checked out, and the advance springs adjusted to get a straight line
advance between idle and 2400 rpm, where it is full-in. The vacuum
portion affects the timing only while the pedal is backed off, and the
vacuum increases.
