Rodney:
Thanks to you and to Mark L for the info on what issue to look for.
You're right--the pictures are a bit small, but it looks like the
firewall modifications were very nicely done. I wonder if they
relocated the heater core or if it just won't be used. From the
picture, it also looks like they're moving the wheel wells in a bit to
fit the (probably) big tires. I wonder if they'll be using a 'Vette IRS
similar to the one in Jay Leno's Toronado on page 65. With the aluminum
castings that Chevy used it's definitely a thing of beauty. The Tiger
should be a slick machine when it's done. I hope Dale will post some
pics of the IRS installation on his website--I'm curious as to how the
installation is actually accomplished. Anyway, I hope I have the chance
to see the car at a show after it's finished.
Interestingly, I'd heard of a retrofit IRS for early mustangs that was
designed by Ford back in the day but was never released. And there on
page 70 is the unit installed on a '66 coupe. Since it was designed
back in '64 or thereabouts, perhaps it would be a period correct swap
into our cars? :-) The neat thing is that it bolts up directly to the
(discarded) leaf spring mounting points on the body and the mounting
setup itself helps control axle hop. The rear track on a mustang was 56
inches (compared to our 48.5), so I suppose it would require shortening
the control arms and stub axles get it to work on a stock Tiger.......
So many ideas, so little money. :-)
Oh, another point of interest (well, I thought it was interesting). The
article referred to the car as a "Shelby-built Tiger". Though the
phrase is technically incorrect, it's been suggested in a couple of
magazines (and, I believe, on this list) that what will make the Tiger's
value soar is the Shelby connection. While admittedly things got a bit
muddled with Ford using the Cobra name and Shelby being heavily involved
with the Mustang, I think that a fairly high percentage of people refer
to the AC Cobra as the Shelby Cobra. Maybe owning a 'Shelby-built Tiger'
isn't such a bad thing? Something to think about, anyway.
Best Regards
