Bill
Stumble and stalling is usually a fuel delivery problem, but yours
is only happening at idle?
Stumble at speed is a fuel problem.
A sharp shut down is ignition.

Your problem seems to be in the idle circuit. The easiest way to
check for fuel delivery problem would be to check the fuel bowl when it
stalls, but you need to have it stall in your driveway or garage from a
traffic and safety point of view. It sounds like a too lean fuel mixture at
idle problem.

If you turn the idle screw in and increase the idle RPM; does the engine
stay running?

Check the plugs for gap and make sure all the ignition wires are
good
Check the distributor cap and rotor
Check the wires and connections to the coil
Check the idle jet screws to see if they just need an adjustment
        Check for vacuum leaks.
Check for cracked vacuum hoses; pull them off and check for cracks
on the inside of the hose ends.
Check the carb is not loose
Check the carb manifold gaskets for vacuum leaks
Clean the idle circuit of the carb; you might be able to do this by
running a can of Gumout through the carb

Hope this helps

Subject: stalling

Looking for a little advise.

I had a chance to take my 65 Sunbeam Tiger on an extended drive yesterday
and while idling at a stop light experienced a stumbling idle and then the
engine stalled.

It was 79 F in Ft. Lauderdale, and the engine temp was between 175-185F. I
refired it and it seemed to run fine through the gears, but would stumble
again while stopped. Upon further inspection I found the fuel level in the
filter was cycling between starving and filling at idle. Checking the level
this morning it was full.

It appears the fuel pump is providing proper volume during warm up and the
fuel filter clean. I am not sure if the problem is the pump, carb or some
vacuum imbalance. Perhaps ignition? It appears to happen only when the
vehicle is fully warmed up and has been driven for a couple of hours.

Any ideas on how to narrow the problem down would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Bill Lawrence
