I just stood my standard 289 crank on end and it rang like a bell.
It has been my experience that any metal casting will ring like a bell
unless it has a crack or flaw within the casting then it goes "thunk".

Here is a test you can use to determine if a crank is a HP: stand the
crank upright with the rear face on the floor. Using a hammer or other
suitable metal tool, light tap the face of the front (top)
counterweight. If you have a standard crank, you will hear a dull "thunk,"
whereas a HP crank will ring like a bell.
