Jay,

You asked if the timing chain covers were different enough that you could be 
routing water to an incorrect location. I you have the oil gauge line coming 
out of the timing chain cover than I would say you have somehow connected it up 
to a water passage. The oil pressure line should be hooked up at an outlet on 
the left side of the cast iron block, just rearward of the timing chain 
cover.
