With a long enough socket extension, you should be able to go right up beside
the cable and remove the bolt that holds the end into the tranny. The whole
works pulls right out. There is supposed to be a clip that holds the gear onto
the end, but it wasn't there on mine. I got one from Ford, and it fit fine.
To put it all back, wrap some masking tape around the head of the bolt, so it
can be wedged into the socket, and you can then go right up the same way and
reinstall the bolt, then wiggle the socket off the head.
