Jim, the cable attaches to a nylon gear that goes into the trans. I
hope you have small hands or patience, as you take off the cable
retaining bolt to the trans, and pull out he outer cable, and you should
be able to get to the remaining gear with needle nose pliers.
It has been so long time since I worked on a top loader, and I am not
sure, but there is an access plate on the trans tunnel, drivers left
side, and you may has some access to the cable from it.
After getting everything out, make sure the new cable assembly has the
same length end that goes into the speedo. If not carefully grind it to
the same length, so you don't damage the speedo.
