Hi Theo:
Thanks for the reply--I've got to delve a bit more into how the GM 
1-wire was set up in the actual vehicles (thanks Steve!).  I checked my 
Toyota manual and noticed that the internally regulated alternator on my 
truck is wired to the charge light, but is not a one-wire setup.

To answer your question as best I can:
"because it used to."

No logic there.
