Tim, you've already figured it out, but for anyone that has "overheating" problems: Heed Stu's advice and check the regulator. The PO's mechanic (that's giving the maximum benefit of the doubt here..) had screwed the regulator to the back side of the dash (using a wood screw, of course - gotta use the right hardware for the job).
