My home town is LA. I remember when it had only 2-3 million people in
the metro area and the smog was so bad that you could not see across the
street. I also remember not being able to take a deep breath without
coughing. I also remember not being able to keep my eyes open and the
stinging and tearing that was caused by the smog. I also remember that
the majority of the media and population didn't blame the automobile and
when the evidence finally sunk in these same people didn't want anything
done about it because it would change their lifestyle. I also remember
being one of those people.

The feds mandated cleaner air amidst great controversy that continues
today, but the results are clear (literally and figuratively). You can
breath in LA now. It still isn't clean mountain air and never will be,
but it is much better with twice the population. An unanticipated side
benefit is that modern cars with modern fuel injection and technology
are much better transportation that the cars of the good old days. They
may not have the character and charm of our leaky LBC's, but they are
more reliable, comfortable, smoother, convenient, efficient, handle
better and often quicker. I still like old cars. I own 4 pre 1969 cars
that I drive (and work on) on a regular basis. I will fight legislation
that wants to take them away, because they are only a small part of the
problem that will eliminate itself, as the popular interest in these
cars die off along with us us 50-70 year old curmudgeons.

Time to get of my soapbox and put my 66 GT350 back together so I can go
burn 110 octane leaded race gas running around Willow Springs while a
modern, clean running, pump gas, Mustang with a Vortec supercharger
passes me on the straight. (Punk kids :>)
