Mark, sounds like you have a servo problem, and if you have some white
smoke from the exhaust, starting from rest, that is the brake fluid
being sucked out of the vacuum can of the servo.  

Also look at the carpet under the clevis pin for the MC, and see if the
MC is leaking into the car from the rear of the MC.

You can do a rebuild, if you take your time.  White Post will sleeve,
and rebuilt your servo for about $500, if the bores are gone.

If you switch form DOT 4, to silicone, then you must disassemble the
entire brake system, and make sure that the old fluid is completely out.
Otherwise, you will have a soft pedal.

DOT 4 is fine, just don't expect it to last 35 years.  Change fluid
every 2 years.  Remember, its your brakes.
