There used to be a unit used to balance wheels while they were on the
car. The wheels would be jacked off the ground, a large full hub-cap
like device attached to the wheel that has small adjusting wheels in the
center, and a motor with small flywheel to spin up the front wheels. The
rears were spun by the engine with one wheel off the ground. Wont work
on LSD rear ends.
It balanced very well, was easy to use, and quite common.
Mercedes early wheels were made the same way, and they balanced them.
I had it done that way on my MG-TD, and XK 120M when they were new, as
there wasn't another method commonly used.
