I found some interesting formulas at http://www.knfilters.com/affacts.htm,
most notably this one that relates air filter size to engine size and
output:
Filter Area = Engine CID * RPM at peak HP / 20.839
They also state that when looking at a filter element, subtract 3/4" from
its height to deduct the effect of the rubber seals and the very ends of the
pleats, which flow very little air. If you apply that to our Tiger air
cleaners, you end up with an effective filter height of about 1"...
