Yes, I remember them.

I had one on a Subaru "Brat" that I was running around in circa 1983 or so. The
car had a Rajay turbocharger kit installed (it was the '80s, turbocharging was
big!), and part of the kit included a water injection system that operated by a
switch on the intake manifold sensing boost pressure. You had an underhood
waterbottle (made of glass) that you kept filled with distilled water. There
was a screen on the fill neck to filter the water, but anything smaller than a
sparrow got in the tank.

When you stepped on the gas, the boost pressure went up and the water injection
kicked in.

The car went pretty good for a POS, and never pinged unless the water ran out
and was a fun drive until someone you knew saw you in it. Interestingly, off
boost the car got better mileage then before the kit was installed. The turbo
mixed the gas/air a little better I think.

I sold the car after a couple of years, and the kid that bought it discovered
that he could increase the power delivered by turning the waste gate screw in.
Eventually he blew the engine up.
