        Good question.   I prefer to clean the thread of my Sunbeam's  bolts 
 with a wire brush and chase the threads in a tap hole with a SAE fine 
 thread bolt made to act like a tap.    Just cut 3 or 4 slots down the 
 lenght of the thread of the correct size SAE bolt , then screw it into 
 the tap hole.    This seems to clean the threads very well and cuts 
 little or none of the original thread metal.
