In my case, the Robbins top for my Mk II was made with the rear bars too close 
together, so it wasn't a front-to-back spacing problem but the distance between 
the two chrome deck mounts. I don't believe as Doug suggested that they 
differed from car to car or that mine were moved.

I think the variance is introduced with bodywork repairs over the years and 
a change in windshield.  The cars must have some variance otherwise they 
wouldn't make a range of shims for the windshield.
