SHAME ON YOU!!!
There is NO excuse for ever being in first gear at "fairly high rpm"
with a stock transmission. First is a bull gear and wears rapidly. It
should be used strictly for transitioning from the stopped state into
the moving state and you should get into second expeditiously.
Certainly never over 2000rpm in first. Sounds like the carbon facing
might be fractured or missing a piece. Time to pull the engine...
