Billy, It is my belief that this is an incremental degeneration in the
quality of what is available.
Those firms that did once sell better quality items - and charged more for
them - no longer stock those items because insufficient numbers of people
bought them. The masses look only at price, and choose the lowest possible
price. Anyone selling quality items at a higher price is gradually edged out
of the business. Those few more discerning buyers who would be prepared to
pay more are insufficient to keep those suppliers in business.
Add to this the harder issue of distinguishing high quality from an
apparently identical item which in use turns out to be rubbish. e.g.
hyraulic seals for brake and clutch cylinders that look identical, but only
last a few months before they disintegrate.

That's not true. It's a matter of not being able to get anything else.
You can pay more, but it's still the same hose. Nobody sells quality any
