Let's re-think that, a bit. Yes, it sounds like the front carb is
running too rich. If the engine has run this way since it's last
tune-up; O.K. Do as Frank suggests and lean the mixture. But, if it
has suddenly developed this problem......well, those jet carriers don't
back themselves off ("richening" the mixture), so leave the jet
adjustment alone. Assuming no quirky ignition issues, I'd say check for
a stuck float valve, or a leaky (slowly sinking) float in the front
carb. Is the jet going fully back up, when the choke is released?
Sometimes, with too much wear, in the right places, the jets won't
return to their "run" position, against the bottom of the adjusting nut.
Push up on the bottom of the jet, to check. If you hear a "click"
(don't push too hard, or you could break the plastic tube the jet is
in), that was the problem.
Once a set of SUs has been CORRECTLY set-up, and adjusted, they will
stay that way, unless someone has done/does something stupid to change
them.
Also, what color is the smoke, Joe? Black is caused by an over-rich
mixture. Blue is oil. Which is it? Black is FAR easier to deal with,
as a rule. White smoke is unlikely, given the symptoms you've
described; so a head gasket leak is probably not indicated.
I like to be long on the diagnosing, rather than quick on the adjusting,
in order to get it right the first time.

Front carb is too rich. Try leaning it out a little, the idle should
improve then test it at speed.
