Ok then, I got a 295 head for $50 bucks, it has been on a basement shelf for
years and years. Not bad condition at all, just dirty.
One of these days I am going to have to tell my engine guy what I need done
This engine will be just for fun so I will go with standard valves and springs
which it has and he can install new valve guides and deck it.
The question is how much decking to keep the cylinder volume about the same or
a bit less so the compression is just a bit higher. Now it is 8.5 compression
stock and maybe 9.5 would be nice or somewhere in between.
This is a 948cc over bored .060 to 998cc and is low compression, ie the dished
out pistons. From what I can find chamber volume for a 998cc is 28.3 and for a
stock 948 low compression is 24.5cc thus 3.8cc difference. Stock 295 head is
2.750 thick, it is now at 2.734 so in my mind it has been skimmed at one time.
Two references I found suggest .060 to .080 skimming for .998cc engine with
dished pistons to maintain stock compression. Big difference I should think
between 60 and 80.
What do I need to tell my head guy needs to come off? I know many have done
this mod before, what did you do?
Any advise welcome as usual.
