For small items, clamp them in a vise and clamp the negative lead to the vise.
For medium items, clamp them in a vise and clamp the negative lead to the work.
For large items, place them on the bench or on the ground and clamp
the negative lead to the work. Be mindful of the area around where
you are welding.
Pulling or pushing are different techniques used in different situations.

I practice on scrap before every important weld. Welding is a thing
that you must do often to stay good at.
If you are planning to weld a fender, for example, get an old fender
and practice. Get your feed and current settings right and make a few
welds. Then, when it is time to do the real fender, everything will
go nicely.
