I figure that normally I'd expect the first filter to last 500 if not a 1000
miles. Anything filtered by the filter stays filtered. The filter isn't
likely to be clogged at 100 miles let alone 500 or a 1000. Not least to do a
100 mile oil change is extra precautious for me and the oil didn't have that
much in it and neither did the magnetic sump plug.

Why would you take the chance of circulating new oil through a contaminated
filter, to possibly re-distribute some of the metal contained within through
your expensive engine....for the relatively EXTREMELY minor cost of a new
filter?
