A few years ago, after "the spacer" got a lot of air time on this list,
I decided to run the spacer again. Don't even remember why, and don't
want to even re-visit the question. I have been running the spacer AND
adjusting the "traditional roller bearing" way. Other than feeling
loose, the bearings looked perfect when I took them out last week. I
wonder what the failure mode is when the spacer is at fault? Broken
spindle? Bearing coming apart laterally? I can't even SPELL engineer.

That depends on whether you intend to treat them as normal roller
bearings or follow the late MGB concept of retaining the pot-metal
spacer, like John Twist does, in the hope that it makes it stronger.
I imagine that bearing engineers just look at you funny if you suggest
doing this. My roller bearings have been working just fine for the last
three or four years with no spacer through long road trips, autocrosses
and many other exercises and about 30,000 miles. I suppose I ought
to open them up this winter and inspect them.
