Ah, I had a '78 X1/9, (ugly) brown with tan interior. The
mechanicals (engine, transmission, brakes, etc.) were 
robust and dependable.  I ran mine for 100K miles, until
my 2nd child was almost 2, as I didn't want to give it up.
It was the rust that was making it show its age.  It was
a fun car, handled unbelievably (compared to my MGB), and
would swallow a big cooler in the front trunk. Beach time!
If you like to tinker, you might look into replacing the 
4-speed with a 5-speed, and replacing the 1300cc engine 
with a 2-liter twin-cam.  And replace those ugly bumpers
(which are actually good for tying a canoe down :).
