Hello Spridgets,
my (then) wife and i went to england in the mid 80's. part of the
package was a rental car for week in england.. when we went to pick
up the car there was another american couple being surprised that
there were other fees and charges associated with actually GETTING
the car. anyone who has rented one at bargain rates knows the
routine. and they were being told that all the rental agency had
were manual transmissions... well, i've eaten enough food whilst
driving that shifting with the wrong hand is no problem, but they
had only driven automatics previously.. but they were still game...
we said ok see out at winchester, were we both headed, and off we
went...
we took off and had no real instances other than pulling out of the
occasional parking lot and being on the wrong side of the exit as we
did so... wonderful roads, a good time indeed, but we never saw the
other couple...
imagine if you can.. being dumped into LONDON traffic, on the wrong
side of the street with a 5 speed manual instead of an auto..
when we returned the car in inquired as what happened to them...
"oh, they got about 5 blocks and abandoned the effort" we were told!
musta been a nightmare! we had a ball!!!!
by the way that when i learned the trick of watching the odometer to
see when the gas gauge starts to come off FULL in a rental car. ..
figure out how far away from the return you need to refill the gas
and still return it as FULL and not get charged an arm and leg for
the agencies gas or have to pay the prices at a nearby station.
