Nobody mentioned yet that some vehicles have both AWD and 4WD. My Ford
Expedition does- AWD for slippery roads where traction will be transmitted
to a slipping wheel when required, and 4WD (with low and high gears option)
for off road work where the diffs are locked and wind up of the transmission
is not a problem due to wheels slippage.
During winter trips to Colorado and New Mexico, I used AWD on the road and I
have not ended up in a ditch yet.
