"No oil in the dashpots"

I've heard of SU's used strictly for racing
where the air valve is modified and stays
in the wide open position. Basically, it's
been turned into an open throat carb.
and is totally unsuited to street use.

I don't know anything about "crash" boxi
but synchros in our boxi were produced
with petroleum based oils in mind, as were
the Datsun 5 speeds we use in conversion.

In my Dat. 5 speed....
I use synthetic gear oil in the winter 'cause
it makes shifting so much easier after initial
start however, once the gear box warms up,
the synchros are very easy to beat.

Once Spring arrives, I change back to petroleum based gear oil....synchro
action is
a helluvalot better than with the synthetic.

One might do this with strictly racing carbs
wherein the air valve is wide open all the time.
