Hi Geoff,
Graphited "Rope" was a pretty common main bearing seal awhile back. However,
all the ones I saw had the graphite grease impregnated in them. Never saw any
that needed graphite grease added later.
That said, I would think the graphite grease would be a good thing to
soak/apply to the rope seal. Should be pretty easily available at plumber
supply houses, I'd imagine. Just think! You've already got the stupid rope
conformed now, so it should go back in with no PIA!
Have fun! Paul A

Subject: ok, so is a Perkins diesel an LBC?
I'm reassembling a 3 cyl. Perkins diesel with rope seals as the rear main
seals. Soaked them in oil for several hours, then installed them in the
carriers, then the carriers to the block, (which was a HUGE pia), then noticed
in a completely separate section of "the book" that they should be coated with
"graphited grease" just before installation.
Anyone know if this is necessary?
