Couple of things on the tach. If the car is negative ground, disconnect the tach immediately. Check it to see if it has been converted. You have to open it up. I assume the needle pegged once you turned on the key. Did it drop with the key off? If not, it may just be stuck. Tap it. Is the coil wired the correct way?
