Is this referring to the cupped "washer" things in there?
I butchered on of those up and smothed it out as much as I could when I
assembled everything, but feel like I ought to buy new ones. What do they
do and are they under significant load?

Hi Jon,
I think you'll find this is really a distance piece rather than a crush
spacer/piece. Usually there are some shims by it, some spacer shims still
available to get the correct tightness on the pinion nut. Just use the
piece
again, properly shimmed.
