A quick perusal of the Machinery's Handbook (doesn't everybody have one)
doesn't give a reason for number of flutes but it may have something to do
with tool strength and type of material you're tapping. I know here at work
we use mostly helical flute taps but then we're dealing mostly with high
temp steels (high Nickel & Cobalt content).
