Mike,
You won't electricute yourself... burn maybe... but not electricute.
Removing the cable doesn't remove the solenoid from grounding out if it's
bad. Remove the solenoid from the _battery tray_, and see if you still get
those sparks.
If you were closer I'd come and take a look.
