Mike,
The pull switch must be getting hot because it is carrying current -
right?
So one end of the cable - the switch - must be shorting to the
negative supply, and the switch mounting on the dash must be earthing
(+ve on your sprite I presume?) to complete the circuit.
If you cannnot prevent the cable / switch from shorting internally,
then how about insulating the pull switch from the dashboard. Or maybe
using an insulated pull cable - string ?? ;-).
