Yeah, that's pretty close:
I've seen plates from the 40's and 50's that are both black letters on
yellow and yellow letters on black -- they are a different size/shape than
current plates as well.
1956-1962 Black letters on yellow plate (same size/shape as current) -- "56"
was stamped/painted on plate and a sticker was used for subsequent years.
No month sticker as far as I know.
1963-1970 (or so -- see discussion elsewhere) Yellow letters on black plate.
Stamped "63" and used stickers as on current plates.
1970-1984 (or so) Yellow letters on blue plates.
1984- first blue letters on white (reflective) plates (with the little sun
logo) followed by any number of special plates (firefighter, LA, Tahoe,
whale, you-name-it).
Now back to something more relevant.....
