Hi Andy,
The overdrive unit bolts on to the back of the box and there are more than
one type, some better than others.
There is a company in the UK who produce a special front housing so what you
end up with is an overdrive unit with a drive flange/yoke at each end.
Assuming you had a dual flange unit you could also produce a special front
sliding yoke to mount the overdrive to the box. But, you would need some
kind of rotoflex type coupling at the overdrive output to prevent the now,
very short, propshaft from bending with up and down axle movement.
Not least the overdrive unit would need firm mounting brackets to prevent is
breaking loose and spinning freely. I guess the tunnel might not opening out
too.
Electrics would be the least of your problems.
So. while it can be done, it would be easier to fit a 5 speed (Ford if in the
UK) or 6 speed (Caterham if very rich and change the diff ratio).
