I've done that but not using a spanner.  I was on my way to a wedding the
other side of our little country and kept hearing an intermittent 'clunk'.
After a particularly large clunk I could see a trail of sparks behind the car
and you can guess the rest.  Not much apart from a wire coat hanger will re-
hang an exhaust in an emergency, because rope and such like burns through.
