Jim,
because when I broke a half shaft it sheared at the base of the splines,
and I was able to retrieve the broken off end with a magnet fixed to the end
of a
length of wooden dowel. Whole job took less than 30 minutes from wheel removal
to 
driving again - but I had worked out which side to strip down
