Creaking can be down to corrosion and fatigue in the threaded portion of the
vertical link. If this has been neglected and/or greased (rather than oiled)
in the past, pitting can start at the top of the threaded portion, cracks
spread from here. Even if this area has been well maintained in it's recent
past, the results of previous neglect can become apparent 15-20 years down
the line,
