If worn synchros are really the only problem, consider
replacing them.  The Spit gearboxes are more
rebuildable than average.  And I think the older
3-rail models like
yours are even easier to disassemble than the
newer ones, because you can remove the input
shaft from the front, instead of having
to remove everything else first.
