My 65 spitfire mk2's gearbox has a couple of worn synchros and a good
used
gearbox from a '72 spitfire came available locally. Would this be a
direct swap
with mine? Thanks,
==AM==
Jason, if that good used gearbox really is from a '72, it will go in
almost without modification. The MkIVs used an all-syncrho version of
the same three-rail gearbox your '65 has. The '72 is about 1/2" or so
longer, but that will cause no problems as the driveshaft sliding
spline should more than accommodate the extra length. Biggest challenge
probably is to remove that driveshaft, install a larger u-joint flange
on the front, and then reinstall the driveshaft!
Again, assuming your '65 is essentially original, the input shaft,
throwout bearing and release arm, bellhousing and such will all mate up.
So, yeah, it is virtually a direct swap!

*Mrs Irrelevant: Oh, is it a jet?
*Man: Well, no ... It's not so much of a jet, it's more your, er,
Triumph Herald engine with wings.
