"...Any reason why you would have to unlatch it to unzip the rear
window?..."

I should think the only reason is that, when you unlatch, you reduce the
tension in the whole thing, so the zipper will be easier to move. Even
more so when zipping it back up again. Depends on how taut you get it!!

The button snaps aren't so difficult. They come in two parts, to go
either side of the material. The outer part looks a bit like a
mushroom. You make your hole in the material at the desired location,
then put the stalk of the mushroom through the hole, then put the other
part on the stalk. You then need a bit of metal rod with a bit of a
point on the end of it (not sharp, around 120-135 deg) - I used a bolt
that has a pointed rather than a flat end. Put the top of the mushroom
on a bit of wood (to absorb the impact without damaging it or anything
else), put your pointy rod into the end of the stalk, hit a couple of
times with a hammer - the stalk splays out and holds everything in
place. There's bound to be some proper tool out there you can use to do
this, but this approach worked fine for me!

And yes, you do only get one shot at it! If you get it wrong they
should be easy enough to remove (drill the stalk out I'd guess), and I'm
sure you can get replacements at any hardware or fabric shop, but you
will have a small hole in your top where you made the hole in the wrong
place.
